September 2017: Outlander (vol 1) by Diana Gabaldon

Hi Friends :)

Welcome back for another book of the month!
As it's time to go back to school, I decided to start my year with something casual to read. That's why I went for Outlander.

Summary:

In 1946, after working apart during the Second World War, British Army nurse Claire Randall and her husband Frank, a history professor, go on a second honeymoon to Iverness, Scotland. Frank conducts research into his family history and Claire goes plant gathering near standing stones on the hill of Craigh na Dun.
She faints when investigating a buzzing noise near the stones. Upon waking, she finds herself back to the Scotland of 1743 where she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings.

My opinion:

I first discover about this series of books when I heard about the TV show.
Fun fact: Once I got my hands on it in the public library of my city, people told me that Outlander was originally marketed as a romance novel because the publisher didn't know what else to do with it.

But this book is no ordinary romance novel.

First, it doesn't follow any typical romance formula and is a real genre bender that doesn't fit into only one category. Outlander has a swoon-worthy hero and dozens of truly romantic scenes that should be sufficient to satisfy even the most discriminating romance reader, while it's time travel aspect and a few references to witches and fairies should be of interest to readers of fantasy and paranormal stories.

Then, Outlander is a historical nowel full with details of 18th century life in the Scottish Highlands both inside and outside a castle or large estate. I have had fun finding definitions to the words and terms that are used in everyday life.
It also recounts some of the events leading up to the Jacobite Pretender's Uprising of 1745.

At last, Diana Gabaldon is an amazing writer who delves deep into her characters lives and the history surrounding them, painting an extraordinary picture that truly transports the reader to another time and place.
Claire is such a strong but lovely character with  her 20th Century knowledge and her total self reliance.
Jamie, the male protagonist, is an easy for any woman to fall for: he is a brute force and yet there is this little boy image of pure love and innocence.
The antagonist, Jack Randall is horrid.
In the end, story lines are extremely engaging and vivid.

For all those reasons,I would heartily recommend this series and this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a dose of romance.
